The health and hygiene of astronauts are crucial to the success of space missions. But living in space is far from a wellness retreat. Limited space, dry air in the station, radiation, microgravity, and especially the lack of running water present unique challenges. Astronauts can’t simply take a shower or enjoy a relaxing bath like on Earth. Instead, they rely on special waterless cleansers, moist wipes, and sponge baths. This helps remove sweat and dirt without water floating around the cabin. The wipes are specially designed for use in space. Brushing their theeth involves a small amount of water and toothpaste. Fun fact: after brushing, astronauts swallow the toothpaste because there’s no sink to spit it out into. This also prevents water droplets from floating around and potentially damaging equipment. To wash their hair, astronauts use a special waterless shampoo that doesn’t require rinsing, just massage it in and wipe it off with a towel. 

The air inside a spacecraft or space station is often very dry, which can lead to dry skin. To stay hydrated, astronauts use extra-moisturizing creams and lotions. Another concern during their journey is radiation. In space, astronauts are exposed to higher levels of radiation than on Earth. While the space station offers protection against most of it, high-SPF sunscreen is used as an extra layer of skin defense.
